Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for a Biological Field Technician.  Since 1990, WEST has grown to be one of the premier environmental and statistical consulting firms in the United States. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data.
WEST has several openings for field technicians to conduct northern spotted owl surveys on private timber lands throughout western Oregon and northern California. Primary duties will include driving and hiking forest roads at night to access survey stations, conducting electronic broadcast surveys for northern spotted owls, and accurately recording any owl species heard or seen.  Secondary duties will include day-time surveys to follow-up on any night-time detections of spotted owls, occasional day-time visits to historic nest or roost locations, completing data forms, and any additional duties as required. A housing stipend may be provided depending on location. A vehicle will be provided, or mileage will be reimbursed at standard government rates. Pay rate is $15 - $17/hr, depending on experience. Start and end dates are somewhat flexible, but preference will be given to individuals that can work the entire field season. Compensation: $15-17 / hour DOE

Applicants are required to have a BS (or in progress) in wildlife, ecology, or related fields. At least one year of field experience and one year of spotted owl experience is preferred. Must be able to walk long distances with a backpack in extremely steep/brushy terrain, take detailed field notes, be able to work independently and communicate effectively with other personnel, have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, navigate forest roads at night, and have excellent hearing. Technicians must also be able to follow a strict protocol, identify spotted owls by sight and sound, including the ability to differentiate between spotted owl and barred owl vocalizations, hike alone at night, navigate steep/forested terrain, safely navigate active logging roads, and adhere to all WEST safety protocols. Work is conducted almost exclusively independently.
