Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for a part time, experienced Field Technician near Cleveland, OH. Description:
WEST is seeking field technicians for fieldwork that will require short surveys at various times of the day, in a range of temperatures.  Candidate must be comfortable with hazards typical of aerial survey methods, including ability to conduct biological survey data from a fixed wing- aircraft.  Work is part time (approximately 4 hours, up to every other week) and requires availability throughout daylight hours, with 12-24 hour notice.  Technician required to attend 16 hours of training during week of 8 October.
Primary duties involve
  • Conducting aerial waterfowl and waterbird surveys using transect methods over Lake Erie from October 1-May 31,
  • Data entry and activities in support of the survey efforts.
Technician will provide own binoculars and suitable clothing and footwear for airplane-based surveys.
Preference will be given to qualified applicants. No housing or per diem will be provided.

Start date:  October 1, 2017
End Date:  May 31, 2018
Compensation: $15-20/hr DOE
Position (up to 5 part-time temp positions): 2-4 hours biweekly

Requirements:
A completed degree in wildlife biology or related natural resources discipline preferred, but not required; skills in identification.
  • Must be proficient in identification of 1) all species of waterfowl and waterbirds in breeding and alternate plumage, and 2) other Midwest bird species, including eagles by sight.   Candidates with a demonstrated experience in bird identification from aerial platforms will be given preference.
  • Precise and thorough electronic and paper data collection is required.
  • Able to work independently but cooperatively with project manager, field supervisor, pilots, and other technicians.
  • Employee must be able to appear for work on time with 12-24 hour notice (all daylight hours).
  • Maintain focus for long periods of time.
  • Follow instructions from manager and team leader.
  • Maintain positive attitude and accept guidance and constructive criticism.
Applicants must be in good physical shape as surveys will be conducted from an airplane where temperatures and conditions can be extreme. Environmental conditions include turbulence and potential for motion sickness.   Proficient use of GPS units, computers, and other field equipment required.
