Description:
WEST has an opening for a biological field technician for a project in Jefferson County, New York, beginning immediately and running at least until August/September,  2018.  Primary duties involve conducting standardized fixed-point avian use surveys for large birds. Fieldwork will require long days outside where very cold temperatures are likely in winter. Candidate must be comfortable with driving a UTV or four-wheel drive vehicle, isolation, and cold. Job duties require use of a compass and Global Positioning System devices. Training will be provided. Avian use surveys will be conducted in 3 conservative days per month requiring two overnight stays in a remote location. Lodging will be provided at the location.  A UTV or four-wheel drive vehicle will be provided, as well as GPS units and other field equipment. Field technicians must be equipped with suitable footwear (rugged, warm boots) and appropriate clothing.

Compensation: $14-$16/hr DOE
Start date: ASAP
End date: At least until August or September 2018

Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree (or pursuing degree) in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or equivalent degree preferred. Ideal candidates must be proficient in identification of bird species in northeastern North America by sight and sound, and should be able to work independently and interact positively with project manager, field supervisor, landowners, and other technicians. Candidates experienced in field identification of birds will be given preference.
 
Employee must be able to appear for work on time (surveys often begin as early as sunrise), maintain focus for long periods of time, follow instructions from manager and team leader, maintain positive attitude, and accept guidance and constructive criticism. Precise and thorough data collection is essential.
 
Applicants must be in good physical condition, as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme. Environmental conditions include working in rain, wind, mud, and sometimes very cold temperatures. Proficient use of topographic maps, compass, GPS units, and other field equipment required..
